PHASE II
Phase II - Spiritual Direction

For individuals and professionals who discern they are called to the ministry of spiritual direction including those trained/formed as spiritual directors who wish to update or further their skill and practice.

What is spiritual direction? To clarify, it is not counseling, or coaching, or therapy. It is accompaniment, a relationship in which one person accompanies another as that person seeks direction in his or her spiritual life. It is an ancient art, which has sprung up to new life in our own time.

Spiritual direction is exploding out of the box into many new contexts: the workplace, hospice, chaplaincy, youth activity, Twelve-Step programs and many others.

Wherever one find openness to Presence,
discernment,
resistance to the toxicities of our culture,
awareness that we are all on a spiritual journey,
and careful attention to each other’s sacred stories,
there you find spiritual direction.

At this time of change, spiritual direction offers to many a way both ancient and contemporary to re-ground and renew themselves as people of Spirit, as seekers of their full humanity, as pilgrims on a journey.

Within community, always engaging the body, mind and heart, participants learn to identify the issues in spiritual direction and have opportunity to practice this art of listening. The year begins with a 4-day residency and ends with a 5-day residency.

- practice in spiritual direction

2. Apply for Phase II – the Practicum Year:
1. Before April 30, 2013 submit the following to the Director of the Ontario Jubilee Program at ontjubilee@gmail.com:

a) contact information and background: list of education and training as well as work history.

b) a 3-5 page essay describing your discernment process and why you feel you are ready to begin the practicum in Spiritual Direction.

c) two letters of reference (e.g. spiritual director, therapist, soul friend or pastor) describing how he/she knows you, what they know of your emotional and spiritual maturity, and why they recommend you to the program.

3. When your application has been confirmed, complete the online registration form and send $60 to Five Oaks.

Components of Phase II:

1. Begins with a 4-day residency at Five Oaks: presentations on spiritual direction, discernment, ethical guidelines and supervision. Body, mind and heart will continue to be honoured and engaged.

2. At home program follows the residency:
a) formational reading and the writing of three response papers (4-6 pages long); two of these may be submitted in a form other than writing. Themes include:
- the art of spiritual direction
- discernment within spiritual direction
- ethical considerations in spiritual direction
b) experiencing a four-day silent retreat arranged by you, either solitary or with others, directed or undirected.
c) participate in supervision, both individual and monthly peer groups.
d) receiving spiritual direction/companioning on a regular basis.
e) mid-year evaluation with one of the staff persons to monitor progress.

3. Five-day final residency June 1-6, 2014 at Five Oaks (Sun 4 p.m. to Fri following lunch)

4. A final position paper/project (10-12 pages if in writing alone; alternatively, a combination of writing and creative expression) that explores your understanding of spiritual direction and/or how you intend to apply the learning of Phase II in your work and ministry. This is due several months following the final residency and completes Phase II.

A certificate of completion will be issued by Jubilee Associates and Five Oaks to all who complete the full requirements outlined at the first residency (as listed above #1 to #4).

The certificate awarded is not, we emphasize, a certificate of competency in spiritual direction but is simply a recognition of satisfactory completion of the stated requirements of the program.
